Charleston, SC – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Xi Omega Chapter, hosted its 68th Annual Debutantes’ Ball at the Mt. Moriah Family Life Center in North Charleston, SC.
The Annual Debutantes’ Ball is a part of Gamma Xi Omega’s Youth Leadership Program, which is an enrichment training program designed to enhance the leadership skills and self-development of selected high school seniors. Thirty high school seniors were the 2017 debutantes presented to society. These young ladies attended a series of sessions providing educational, religious, political and cultural awareness, as well as career development, preparation for college life and lessons on health and heritage. The theme for the Debutantes’ Ball was “Pearls of Poise and Perfection: Launching New Dimensions of Service.” Dr. Ja’net Bishop and Mr. Spencer Pryor served as the hosts for this event. The evening was enchanting and each debutante was poised with grace and elegance. Their debut was followed by the promenade and a waltz beautifully choreographed by Ms. Linda Harvey. Debutantes Indira Lessington, Taniza Maxwell, Akayla Sellers, Cierra Smalls and Kadaiyah Whitehurst mesmerized the audience with their talents. All of the debutantes also performed a tribute song to their parents.
The Twenty Pearls Foundation of Charleston, Inc. awarded six $1,000 scholarships in memory of Mrs. Melanee Williams-Smalls, who was an active member of Gamma Xi Omega and Director of Guidance for Charleston County public schools. These scholarships were presented to the following debutantes: Summer Boyd, Jadesha Hair, Damonja Hilton, Crystal Howard, Brae Mitchell and Akalya Seller. Awards were also presented to the following debutantes based on their advertisement sales in the souvenir book: Treyonna Alston (1st place), Damonja Hilton (2nd place), Chasity Mitchell (3rd place). Quin’Tajah Smalls was named Miss Congeniality.
The 2017 debutantes are seniors from the following schools: Ashley Ridge High School, Baptist Hill High School, Cane Bay High School, Charleston Charter School of Math and Science, Charleston County School of the Arts, Fort Dorchester High School, Goose Creek High School, James Island Charter High School, St. Johns High School, Northwood Academy, Porter Gaud School, Stall High School, Wando High School, and West Ashley High School.
Mrs. Marguerite S. Middleton is the president and Mrs. Gretchen Morgan is the vice –president of Gamma Xi Omega. Mrs. Monica Smalls is the chairman and co-chairman’s Mrs. Dena Magwood and Ms. Laverne Bennett of the 2017 Youth Leadership Program.
